The converted alarm clock I showed previously generally works fine. However, over the past few months, its display part (not the ESP8266 board) tended to sometimes fail to update, requiring a manual reset.
Since the enclosure I used doesn’t expose the board’s reset button, this required reaching under a desk to unplug a USB cable and plug it back in. After a while, I decided to spend the time required to add an external reset button.
While adding the reset button, I noticed that one of the existing connections from the ESP8266 board to the display module was poorly soldered. I fixed it. I have not needed to push the reset button in the weeks since: the frequent failures have disappeared.
