SanDisk claim that their Clip+ MP3 player has a battery life of 15 hours. I've been using the 4GB version for a bit over a year, and it seems to me that the battery life went way down over time. Alternative firmware Rockbox (highly recommended!) comes with a "battery bench" program, allowing me to compare battery performance on a brand-new Clip+ and on a 15-month-old one:
I let each player play the same Ogg-encoded track repeatedly, with the screen off, the original earbuds plugged, and volume level set to -6. The new player lasted 16 hours and 22 minutes before shutting down (about 9% longer than advertised), whereas the old player lasted only 11 hours and 28 minutes; that's about 70% of the original performance, or 76% of the rated performance: not that bad. In both cases, the lowest recorded voltage was 3.292 V.
YMMV.
