A compact camera I have been using since 2017 has some of its buttons become stickier and sticker (i.e., they give less tactile feedback than they used to, just as if they travelled less when pushed). Eventually, some of the buttons stopped working properly; not registering presses, or registering multiple when being pressed hard enough.
This reached a point where the camera stopped being usable in practice, so I decided I could try opening it to clean it, as things could not possibly get worse.
The control wheel in particular was filthy. I was able to remove some of the gunk by inserting paper under it, and by using some contact cleaner and letting it dry thoroughly.
Success: the wheel and buttons work again.
