A year after looking into the ratio reported by Apple’s Fitness and Health apps, it is time to check whether the mostly linear relationship between the two metrics still holds.
Observations:
The relationship between calories spend and kilometers walked doesn’t seem to be linear anymore. Rather, there seem to be two clusters of points, each of them plausibly linear. This is probably related to me visiting a tall office building more often than the year prior, and climbing steps there and on the metro, which, sensibly, the app considers to spend more energy per kilometer walked than on flat terrain.
Gamification appears to have worked: there are very few days where I didn’t reach my self-assigned goal of 5km / 200kcal.
Computing an average over the period, I get , up from 41. Again, I attribute the increase over the previous year to more stair-climbing.
