Today, I think I understood how Starbucks cup sleeves work.
See, more than once, I would order a hot drink, and, much later, try to get the sleeve off the empty cup, perhaps to read what is written on the cup itself: this would prove difficult, as the sleeve would be glued onto the cup. Yet baristas routinely shift the sleeve as they are preparing the drink, perhaps to interpret instructions written on the cup. Never did I notice any Starbucks employee doing anything special get a sleeve to stick.
The secret appears to be that glue melts when heated.
Cup sleeves presumably have a strip of glue on them. When put in contact with a hot drink cup, the glue melts. As the drink cools down, the glue hardens again, leaving the two pieces connected. Mystery solved, I think.
